Environmental chemistry research group

The research topics carried by the Environmental Chemistry Research Group are concerned on the broadly understood environmental chemistry. The accomplished study is focused on the assessment of the impact of municipal waste landfills and municipal wastewater treatment plants on the quality of the aquatic environment with particular emphasis on the presence of endocrine disrupting compounds and their penetration into the aqueous environment. The second direction of realized investigations are chemotaxonomic studies concerned on the identification of plant and animal metabolites (primary and secondary). The obtained results are applied to the determination of chemical similarity/differences between exact species within a genus. The next subject of study is food tests for the content of selected lipophilic antioxidants such as lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, α-tocopherol and all-trans retinol.

Experiments  are realized by newly developed isolation procedures using liquid-liquid (LLE),  solid phase (SPE) and solid micro extraction (SPME) techniques. Gas chromatography with MS detector is used for quantification of assayed compounds. Chromatographic data collected over a dozen years allowed to build a database of analytical parameters (chromatographic retention indices and mass spectra), which are used to identify the analytes present in the tested environmental samples. In addition to chromatographic methods, chemometric techniques are also used for analytical purposes.
